Power Plants
Another work place that was rich in asbestos is power plants. The asbestos mineral has many qualities that endear it to be used in the power plants. Asbestos is resistant to fire and heat. Thus in order to prevent any accident involving heat or fire, many of the important machines and equipments were lined with asbestos. These power plants used to supply electric power and thus played a very important role in the transition towards an industrialized society. A large number of people worked in these power plants that were at the risk of getting exposed to the asbestos. Thus in order to protect these workers from fire and heat related mishaps, the authorities exposed them to a whole new kind of danger.
Some of the machines that were necessarily lined with the asbestos were boilers and gaskets, giant generators, and turbines. In many cases even the floor and the walls contained asbestos. Although the governments started taking some corrective measures to reduce the risk of exposure to asbestos, but it was too late already for many workers. They had already started reporting some symptoms that indicated the presence of mesothelioma. |
