Lung Cancer

The cause of lung cancer is very much akin to the other cancers. In a normal human body the cell growth is regulated by normal bodily mechanisms. As a result the cells divide to produce other new cells only when there is a need. When these bodily mechanisms that regulate the growth of the cells some how get disrupted then the cells start growing in an unregulated manner that leads to the formation of tumor.

It is a well known fact that the main function of the lungs is to help the exchange of gasses in the air and the blood. It is only with the help of the lungs that the body is able to remove the carbon oxide from the bloodstream and acquire oxygen from the inhaled air. The left lung is divided into two lobes and a structure known as lingula whereas the right lung is divided into three lobes. A very thin layer of tissue called pleura covers the lungs and the chest wall. It has been found out that a majority of the lung cancers occur from the epithelial or the lining cells of the larger and smaller airways. On many occasions the lung cancer could also be due to the presence of harmful foreign particles in the mesothelium. This type of lung cancer is known as mesothelioma.

On some occasions the tumor that has been formed in the lung region can generally percolate down to the other parts of the human body. Similarly the tumor from the other part of the body can move up to the lung region. This phenomenon is known as the metastasis.
