Mesothelioma Cure
It is not quite often that a disease has bothered the medical scientists to such an extent. The cancer of mesothelioma is one such disease whose symptoms are known, whose causes are known and yet its cure is not possible. Although the treatments are available that can help alleviate the pain and suffering of the patient but the complete cure is still not possible. Some of the treatment options that are available to the patients are the surgery, the radiation therapy, and the chemotherapy.
The surgery: The surgery is performed only on those patients that are physically and mentally and emotionally prepared to undergo this treatment. The main aim of the surgery is to remove the cancerous tissues from the affected region. A surgery is generally performed in conjunction with other treatment methods like radiation therapy. There are generally three types of surgeries which are palliative surgery, curative surgery, and the diagnostic surgery. It is only the curative surgery that can completely remove the cancerous tissues from the body. The other kinds of surgeries are generally performed to provide symptomatic relief to the patients.
Radiation Therapy: The radiation therapy is one kind of therapy that is sometimes performed simultaneously with the surgery. There are generally two major kinds of radiation therapies which are performed in the present times. The older method of radiation is the method of external beam radiation in which the radiation beam is directed towards the cancerous tissues in order to destroy them completely. The other method is the method of brachytherapy which is a relatively new method and involves the placing of radioactive material inside the cancerous tissue or near to it. The radioactive material emits radiation that completely destroys the cancerous cells. The damage to the nearby cells is avoided as much as possible.
The Chemotherapy: The treatment of chemotherapy generally involves the administration of drugs and medicines to the patient. These drugs and medicines help to destroy the cancerous cells from the affected region. Some of the most commonly used drugs are the cisplatin, and almita. The earlier drugs that were most commonly used in chemotherapy for the treatment of other forms of cancer have not proved successful in the case of mesothelioma. The newer drugs are in comparison more successful in treating mesothelioma. |
