Patterns of Mesothelioma Occurrence

There are varied types of patterns that occur in Mesothelioma. But all the types of Mesothelioma occur due to exposure to Asbestos. The various types of Mesothelioma that are diagnosed in an individual are Peritoneal, Pleural and Pericardial Mesothelioma.

Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common of all malignant Mesothelioma and is estimated to account for about seventy five percent of all this type of disease. The Pleural Mesothelioma is caused due to the occurrence of malignancy in the layer around the lungs that are derived from Mesothelium.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the stomach or abdominal cavity. This lining is called the peritoneum and like the lining of the lungs the peritoneum produces a fluid that protects the stomach and abdominal cavity area. It is less common as compared to Pleural Mesothelioma and it displays a condition commonly known as Ascites.

Pericardial Mesothelioma is the least common of all occurring Mesothelioma cases and accounts for only about five percent of the Mesothelioma cases that are reported or presented to physicians. The Pericardial Mesothelioma occurs due to the display of

Mesothelioma cases of all types were very rare until the last ten years or so. Before that time there were only a handful of cases reported each year across the United States. Today, however, there are an estimated three thousand new cases of Mesothelioma reported every year and one in about fourteen million Americans will fall victim annually to this deadly disease.

Many attribute this rising prevalence of Mesothelioma to the fact that millions of Americans were exposed to asbestos related materials at work before the true dangers were known.
