Use of Drugs to Treat Mesothelioma Pain

The Mesothelioma starts with the exposure of an individual to Asbestos. Broadly classifying there are three different types of medications that are useful for the management of pain caused by Mesothelioma. These drugs are enlisted below :-
  1. Nonopioids
  2. Opioids
  3. Rapid-acting Opioids.
Opioid belongs to the narcotic family and is not available easily over the counter without doctor’s prescription. It is used to treat pain of all types. These medications are very effective in controlling the often severe pain that result in the later stages of Mesothelioma and should only be used under the care and direction of a doctor.

Rapid-active opioids are useful for treating the acute pain of Mesothelioma that accompanies the later stages and treatment of the disease. These types of medication are also members of the narcotic family but they are often more sedative than regular opioids. They are often prescribed for patients who are recovering from surgery to remove tumors caused by Mesothelioma.Nonopioids are effective in controlling and managing the pain associated with the milder symptoms of this disease.

Almost all medications and drugs used to manage the pain of Mesothelioma have side effects that can range from drowsiness to nausea and constipation and other serious effects like illusions and prolonged usage may also result in neural problems.

The major issue with these medicines is that these medicines are habit forming and once the patient stops using them the patient also starts to battle with the withdrawal symptoms of these drugs.
